Draw an imaginary line on the map between Dundee and Greenock in Scotland, and the area to the south of the line is the Lowland region. Once a hive of whisky production, the Lowland region now has just 3 distilleries in operation: Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan and Bladnoch.

Other lowland single malts are still available, although no longer produced: Inverleven, Kinclaith, Ladyburn, Littlemill, Rosebank and St. Magdalene.

Lowland malts tend to be lighter than whiskies from other regions and tend to have little or no peating. Lowland whisky is often used as an aperitif due to its dry finish.
